If the value of our homes is going down, then why is it that our property taxes keep increasing from yr to yr?

December 13th, 2009 | by admin |

The business community keeps telling homeowners that our property has decreased in value because of the economic mess we are in. Why is it that my property taxes for my home keeps going up every year. If the value of the home has gone down, the property taxes should go down also. This scenario does not have any logic. Thanks for the answers.

City and county taxes, to keep up the road and schools, fire dept and 911 services is where your taxes are going.

I guess it depends where you are. Mine went down a whopping $9.26 (2007 property tax due in 2008). That may have been due to additional more expensive homes in my county.

Assessed value may have dropped, but the tax rate may have increased (the two are usually independent from each other) to come up with enough money.

I have no equity in my property what so ever. I applied for a reduction on my property tax bill a few months ago. My property tax bill was lowered by about 800.00 which is better than nothing. You should try to apply for a reduction.

Because they change the tax RATE. Say your house is worth 200k and there is a .8% tax rate, that means $1,600/year. Say your house goes down to 100k but they rase the tax rate to 2%, that would mean your taxes would be $2,000/year.
