I want to move a double-wide home to another location and build on the current property. How can I do this?
February 23rd, 2010 | by admin |The house and property are attached on the same deed. I want to split the 2, move the current home to another location, build on the current location, and be financially responsible for both. I still owe a little on the current home (valued at $90,000, but owe $40,000) Any guidance with be much appreciated.
You will have to buy another lot, apply for a building permit with certain stipulations regarding the mobile home, including well and septic or water and sewer hookups, electric, gas, etc. Then, you’ll have to apply for another building permit to rebuilt on the current location. You will also have to apply for a mortgage for the new lot and the new house.
Some areas are very picky about mobile homes, while others are more relaxed. Some require lots of upfront money for building permits. Your local department of licenses and permits will have all the answers for you.

I used to do site prep as well as setup and finish on double-wides as well as modulars. I have even lifted and moved the occasional stick built house. What you want to do ain’t as easy! as was the first time. Trailers aren’t really meant to move more than once. What I would recommend is to go to a few double-wide dealers, and talk to their setup crews to find one that has done this successfully (preferably more than once) When we used to do this we used to build temporary internal trusses and shear walls to strengthen the pieces to keep them from twisting and racking during the move. You will probably want a good electrician to undo the wiring so that wall destuction and time spent wire fishing is kept to a minimum during reassembly and be prepared for a certain amount of collateral damage in any case.
